There’s no getting away from them, whatever social media networks you use, you’ll find an array of memes jumping out at you! And we LOVE a meme… (check out our Twitter!). You may not be as much of a meme super fan as us…. but what if they could be used to help your marketing efforts and boost your brand awareness?

What IS a meme?
The definition of a meme: a virally-transmitted photograph that is embellished with text that pokes fun at a cultural symbol or social idea.
Often they can seem silly or aimless or something that you would have said in the school playground!
Some are completely the opposite and are strategic and succintly though provoking. But a good meme… is always funny!
How can they work for brands?
A [good] meme could go viral and has the potential to meet thousands of people in a matter of minutes, let alone its lifetime. When a brand discovers a type of style that their audience reacts to, they’ve then found an avenue that can be used to market and promote their business without the user even realising what is taking place.
When done correctly, meme marketing has the potential to be extremely successful – it goes past the normality of usual branding strategies and goes above what people are expecting from every day brands or businesses within their newsfeeds. When a user find something funny or amusing or that speaks to their emotional self, they will react and engage… and engagement is the key to growing brand awareness!

If you’re an Instagram fan, you will have seen the meme and theme accounts that are utilising memes to build their brand. They are some of the most engaging accounts on the platform and are a game changer for many. Some of the most popular include @epicfunnypage, @sarcasm_only and @thefatjewish.
You may have noticed that many images look the same as you’re scrolling through a feed – that’s because so many people are using the same ideas! Memes succeed when they have a great caption – this drives engagement and by sticking to short, sweet and simple text that is easy to read, it allows users to scroll through and read the whole post without the need to click individually on each post. The text under the image can be used to elaborate on the image text and tell a story.
The meme aesthetic is instantly recognised – often just images taken from other sources with random text overlaid – but they are instantly recognised as a meme in the layout that is presented.
By using a theme within your memes that are recognisable to your followers, you are instantly building on your brand awareness. Brands can provide a more distinct look and feel to their memes, creating a look that stands out from their competitors.
