Another day, another funky new app to hit the app store – the new standalone app from Instagram called Hyperlapse. I actually was randomly looking for a way to create a simple time lapse video on my iphone a week or so ago for a project I was working on so downloaded this one with glee. And oh, it’s good!
“Using clever algorithm processing, the app makes it easy to use your phone to create tracking shots and fast, time-lapse videos that look as if they’re shot by Scorsese or Michael Mann,” Wired reports.
The tech bit – Instagram explains time-lapse as ‘a technique where video is captured at lower frame-rate than normal, and then played back at a standard frame rate”. It’s very easy to use from the first download (if you’re reasonably proficient with an iphone) and with the built in stabilisation technology you can easily create professional looking video edits with a cinematic look and quality feel. I’ve played round quite a bit with it now and I’m pretty impressed – the quality is excellent and the graphics clear.
When you install, make sure you allow access to your camera and your microphone to enable you to record with sound. Then record your footage in the same way you would a regular iphone video and press the green tick if you are happy with your video once recorded. Allow Hyperlapse to access your photos to save the footage to your camera roll – you now have the choice to share on Instagram or Facebook (of course!). It’s perfect for recording busy streets, snow fall collecting, beautiful sunsets and so much more. I think there are also some great opportunities here for business use – it’s a unique way to show a long design process condensed for example, or give a guided tour round a shop or premises.
Oh and did I mention – it’s free! I’d give it a solid 8/10.app, app review, Facebook, hyperlapse, Instagram, iphone, time lapse, video
