The figures show that just under half (46%) of small business owners do not know if their marketing strategies work. And a further 17% know that they are not working at all (!)

This means that it is vital to know what works and more importantly that your marketing IS working. Therefore, businesses who take hold of their data and use the tools that are available to them will give themselves a better chance of beating the competition in 2018.

Social media is a go for 2018

Most businesses will use some form of social media to marketing their business however Facebook is the platform of choice when it comes to social media marketing for small businesses. 75% of businesses aim to use Facebook in their marketing strategies for the coming year.

To stay ahead of the game and to be on top of the competition requires understanding of Facebook and the changes that it makes regularly to its algorithms. The platform favours mobile content and therefore all content needs to be mobile friendly in order to be noticed and be successful.

Digital marketing tools

The vast majority of business owners will invest money in social media in 2018 however Steve Strauss from USA TODAY recommends that people invest in tools that allow them to monitor traffic and conversions to see what is working or not working. There are plenty of tools out there that can help monitor your results, or using a marketing agency will also give you the confidence as they should provide reporting to enable you to see the results first hand.

Digital marketing budgets

A quarter of small business owners will try to get by during 2018 without increasing their marketing budget, with businesses looking to optimise their digital marketing budgets, seeking low-cost or free online tools. Budgets will naturally always be an difficult point especially for SMEs, however businesses that understand how to use their marketing budgets effectively and get the most from their digital marketing will see better results. Sometimes a little spending saves time and money in the future!

Time and resources

Many small businesses do not have the time or resource to be able to market their business correctly. The task of promoting their business can often be pushed to one side with a quick burst of energy every now and again to enhance new business rates. If a brand is to be successful in 2018, they will need to address the issue of sourcing new business and find time to promote themselves properly. If all the technology is being used but the follow up process is not being addressed, then marketing efforts will be wasted.
