Instagram has rocketed in popularity in recent months, with over 600 million monthly active users – gaining their last 100 million in record time.

Back in November 2016 Instagram introduced shoppable tags which are a game changer for those selling products online.

Shopping tags on Instagram

If you sell products on your website, you can tag them in your posts on Instagram. You can highlight specific products in your posts and drive people to your website, where they can then purchase items.

When someone clicks a tag on your post, they will see:

  • An image of the product from your post
  • A description of the product
  • How much the product costs
  • A link that takes them directly to your website, where they can purchase the product

This month Instagram have announced that they will be rolling these tags out to many more businesses:

“Based on encouraging early results, we’re rolling out these shopping features to thousands of businesses that sell apparel, jewelry or beauty products in the coming weeks. Instagrammers in the US will soon be able shop and browse products from these businesses from posts in feed, on profile and in explore.”

For now this is being rolled out in the US, but shopping tags on Instagram will soon be available for all of us to benefit from.

The Self Serve Tool

Instagram are also adding a Self Serve Tool where customers can ‘Shop Now’ and add items to their basket. This non-intrusive way of selling will revolutionise marketing for online stores and also make for a very enjoyable shopping experience for the customer.

You may have previously discounted Instagram as a platform for your business, but with 10% of the world’s population now using it, it’s time you should think again!
